This commemorative stamp depicts Bab Oudaïa (Bab el Oudaïa), the monumental gate of the Kasbah of the Oudayas in Rabat. The design focuses on the richly decorated horseshoe arch and the intricate geometric carvings that make this Almohad gateway one of Morocco's finest examples of medieval Islamic architecture. Issued for Stamp Day 1949 (Journée du Timbre 1949), the stamp highlights an important national monument and the artistic heritage of Morocco.
Bab Oudaïa was built during the Almohad period in the late 12th century, under Sultan Yaqub al-Mansur, as the main ceremonial entrance to the Kasbah of the Oudayas. The gate is renowned for its elaborate stone decoration, including floral motifs, geometric patterns, and Quranic-inspired artistic elements characteristic of Almohad architecture.
The Kasbah of the Oudayas served as a strategic military fortress controlling the mouth of the Bou Regreg River and protecting the Atlantic coast. Over the centuries, it became one of Rabat's most important historic sites and remains a symbol of the city's architectural heritage.
The 1949 Stamp Day issue honored Morocco's cultural landmarks and promoted philately while celebrating the country's rich historical legacy.
