Bab el-Mrissa in Salé - 50 centime

Bab el-Mrissa (also known as the Gate of the Port or Bab Mellah) is a monumental 13th-century fortified marine gate in Salé, constructed between 1260 and 1270 under the Marinid Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub. Designed as an entrance to the protected inner naval arsenal (dar al-sina'a), its massive horseshoe archway was specifically engineered to allow medieval war galleys and merchant ships to pass directly from the Bou Regreg estuary into the sheltered harbor basin.

Issued in 1955 as part of the definitive monuments and landscapes series (MAROC / المغرب), this 1-franc postage stamp (POSTES / BAB el MRISSA à SALÉ) highlights the monumental gateway. Designed by A. Delpy and engraved by Henry Cheffer, the blue intaglio vignette captures the towering stone bastions and soaring arch of this historic Marinid landmark.
