Hubert Lyautey (1854–1934), who was appointed the first French Resident General in Morocco following the Treaty of Fez in 1912, governed the protectorate until 1925 and was named Marshal of France in 1921. His administration pursued a policy of indirect rule through traditional Moroccan institutions, urban preservation (notably creating dual cities or villes nouvelles alongside historic medinas), and active diplomatic engagement with local dignitaries and tribal elites (notables). Issued in 1954 by Morocco (MAROC / المغرب) to commemorate the centenary of his birth (Centenaire Maréchal Lyautey 1854–1954), this postage stamp (POSTES) depicts Marshal Lyautey Receiving Moroccan Notables in Rabat (Réception de Notables Marocains à Rabat). The scene shows Lyautey in military dress shaking hands with a Moroccan dignitary dressed in a traditional djellaba and burnous, set against the backdrop of Rabat's historic skyline.
