Kasbah of the Oudayas - 60 cent
This stamp depicts the Kasbah of the Oudayas in Rabat, one of Morocco's most important historic fortresses. In the foreground, a cannon stands on the fortifications overlooking the Bou Regreg estuary, while a traditional sailing vessel navigates the waters below. The scene emphasizes the strategic military and maritime significance of the kasbah, which has guarded the entrance to the river for centuries. The Kasbah of the Oudayas was established during the Almohad period in the 12th century as a fortified military outpost controlling access to the Bou Regreg River and the Atlantic coast. Over the centuries, it served as a defensive stronghold, a military garrison, and later a residential quarter within Rabat. The fortress played an important role in protecting the region from maritime attacks and in overseeing commercial traffic entering the river. The massive walls, bastions, and artillery positions of the kasbah became symbols of Rabat's military heritage. The cannon shown on the stamp represents the coastal defenses that once protected the estuary, while the sailing vessel illustrates the maritime activity that connected Rabat to international trade routes. Today, the Kasbah of the Oudayas is one of Morocco's most visited historic monuments and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Rabat.
