The light cavalry of ancient Mauretania and Numidia—frequently depicted in classical Roman relief sculptures such as Trajan's Column—played a pivotal role in Mediterranean antiquity. Renowned for their mobility, equestrian skill, and ability to ride bareback without reins, these North African cavalrymen served as formidable allies and mercenaries in major military campaigns across the region, cementing their place in military history. Issued in 1953 by Morocco (MAROC / المغرب) to support military social welfare programs (Œuvres Sociales de l'Armée 1953), this postage stamp (POSTES) features Moorish Horsemen (Cavaliers Maures). The design renders a classical bas-relief depicting ancient North African warriors on horseback carrying round shields (clipeus), celebrating the region's ancient martial and equestrian heritage.
